FAQ for the PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)SM Credential


Q. Is there a new specialty credential in project scheduling?
A. There is a new credential for those that practice project
management in a specialty area: PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-
SP)SM.


Q. Who should apply for the PMI-SP credential?
A. Individuals who spend a majority of their time managing project
schedules should consider applying for this specialty credential.

Q. Why should I pursue the PMI-SP credential?

A. Project scheduling practitioners provide expertise in the
specialized area of developing and maintaining the project schedule.
Project scheduling professionals should be recognized for their
knowledge, skills and experience in this specialized area of project
scheduling.

Q. Do I have to be a PMI Member to pursue the PMI-SP credential?
A. No. Candidates do not have to be a PMI member.

Q. Is there a pre-requisite credential I must attain first before
applying for the PMI-SP?
A. No. The PMI-SP is a stand-alone credential offered as part of PMI’s
family of credentials.

Q. Is there a pilot for the PMI-SP examination?

A. Yes. Candidates can schedule their examinations once approved and
once payment is received, but they can only schedule the examination
after the 30 May 2008 date, when the credential will officially be
launched. The pilot period will run from 30 May to 31 July 2008. The
first 100 people to apply and sit for the exam will receive 50% off
the price of the examination. This will be conducted as a refund.
Candidates will also be entered into one of four regional drawings
(North America, Europe/Middle East/Africa, Latin America and Asia
Pacific) for a chance to win $1,000.00 (US). Candidates must sit for
the examination between 30 May and 31 July 2008 to take advantage of
this promotion.

Q. If I sit for the PMI-SP examination, when will I receive my score?

A. Candidates who sit for the examination during the pilot period (30
May – 31 July 2008) will not receive their scores immediately. PMI
will be determining the pass/fail score (cut score) during this pilot
period. As soon as the cut score is determined (within a 60 – 90 day
timeframe), pilot participants will be notified immediately. Until
that time, communications will be sent to candidates to keep them
apprised of where PMI is in the cut score determination process.

Q. If I already have a credential from PMI, can I still pursue the PMI-
SP?

A. Yes. The PMI-SP is a stand-alone credential. The candidate must be
able to meet all of the eligibility requirements.

Q. What’s involved in getting the credential?
A. Candidates must successfully complete the following:

* The initial evaluation occurs through an application review
(including education and experience requirements).The application will
be reviewed and approved or denied within five days of receipt. PMI
may select any application for audit to verify any aspect of the
application (payment is submitted with the application and required
prior to audit). Approval of the application, along with receipt of
payment, will allow the candidate to pursue the next step to take the
multiple-choice evaluation examination.
o Payment must be submitted with the application and
received by PMI.
* The multiple-choice examination is the second evaluation.
During the examination, candidates will be called upon to demonstrate
their ability to apply knowledge to a variety of situational or
scenario-based questions.
* Upon passing the examination evaluation, candidates will earn
the PMI-SP.



Q. How can I apply for the PMI-SP?
A. The application is available online. You also have the option to
download the application, fill it out and send it to PMI via postal
mail. Please note: Any missing information will result in a delay in
processing.

Q. What supporting documentation should I send with my application?
A. When submitting an application, you do not need to send
documentation. However, PMI does use a random audit process to verify
candidate applications. If you are selected for a random audit, you
will receive notification via e-mail as well as a letter via postal
mail with the instructions and forms needed to complete this
requirement.

Q. What are the eligibility requirements for potential candidates?
A. Specific eligibility is as follows:

* PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)
o Three to five years of project scheduling experience
o With a bachelor’s degree or global equivalent have:
+ 30 contact hours of formal education (must be in
project scheduling)
+ Within the past five years, a minimum of 3,500 hours
of experience in project scheduling

OR

o With a high school diploma or global equivalent have:
+ 40 contact hours of formal education (must be in
project scheduling)
+ Within the past five years, 5,000 hours of
experience in project scheduling



Q. What must I know to complete the multiple-choice examination?
A. The examination is administered globally, via computer-based
testing. In areas of the world where computer-based testing is not
available, paper-based testing will be made available.

The examination consists of approximately 170 questions. Candidates
will be given three-and-a-half hours to complete the examination.
About 20 of the questions, dispersed randomly throughout the
examination, are pre-test (or un-scored) questions.

Applicants who pass the application review are eligible to take the
multiple-choice examination. The eligibility for the examination
period is one year.

During the eligibility period, the candidate may take the multiple-
choice examination up to three times. Candidates should gauge their
time carefully to leave enough time during the eligibility period to
retake the examination, if needed. PMI will collect retake fees for
candidates making second or third attempts to pass the examination.

Q. What happens if my eligibility expires and I have not taken the
exam?
A. Candidate applications are valid for one year from the date of
application approval. If a candidate allows his or her eligibility to
lapse, he or she must re-apply.

Q. If I fail the exam, can I take it again? If so, when can I take it?
How many times can I take the exam?
A. Yes, Candidates are granted a one-year eligibility window.
Candidates have a maximum of three attempts to receive a passing score
on the PMI-SP examination within the one-year eligibility period.
After the third unsuccessful attempt, candidates will have to wait one
year before re-applying for the credential and retaking the
examination. Candidates must submit a re-examination form before each
attempt along with the re-examination fee (please see your handbook
for re-examination fees).

Q. What happens after I pass the exam?

A. After you pass the exam, you may immediately use the credential
after your name (for example, John Doe, PMI-SP). Your name will also
appear in the PMI Online Registry. Credential holders will receive a
package of information with a certificate, letter and credential
holder card in the mail. Please note: It usually takes about 6-8 weeks
to receive your credential package from PMI.

Q. Where will the examination be given?
A. The PMI-SP examination will be offered globally at Prometric
Testing Centers that offer other PMI examinations. You cannot schedule
your examination appointment until you receive your eligibility
notification and have submitted payment. Please refer to the Prometric
website for more information, including scheduling.

Q. How should I study for the multiple-choice examinations?
A. To prepare for the examination, PMI suggests

* Review the PMI-SP Handbook
* Review the PMI-SP Examination Specification
* Review A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge
(PMBOK® Guide) – Third Edition

If you have not completed a course containing Project Scheduling
concepts, PMI recommends you do so. Educational programs are offered
through a variety of providers including:

* PMI component organizations (chapters, SIGs, colleges)
* PMI Registered Education Providers (R.E.P.s)
* University and college academic and continuing education
programs
* Training companies or consultants
* Employer or company sponsored-programs
* Distance learning providers
* Study groups (i.e. local chapter study groups)


Q. Will the examination be available in translations?
A. Not immediately. Examinations are currently in English.
Translations will be considered at a future date.

Q. What is the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program?
A. In order to satisfy CCR program requirements and maintain an active
credential holder status, individuals who have attained the PMI-SP
credential must accrue and report a minimum of 30 professional
development units (PDUs) during each three-year CCR cycle.

The credential holder needs to complete an Application for
Certification Renewal, remit payment of the renewal fee, and reaffirm
the appropriate Code of Professional Conduct. For more information on
the CCR program and how to report PDUs, please refer to the CCR
Handbook.

Q. What are the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) for this
credential?
A. PMI-SP credential holders are required to attain no less than 30
professional development units (PDUs) during each three-year renewal
cycle.

Please Note The Following:

* The 30 PDUs in project scheduling can also be counted towards
the maintenance of the PMP® or PgMPSM credential(s)
* If a project scheduling practitioner is taking general project
management classes, only the sections that pertain to project
scheduling can be applied towards the PMI-SP credential




Q. Will this new credential dilute the PMP credential?
A. No, PMI’s credentials reflect different roles, and therefore,
different candidates. Please visit the Our Credentials section of our
Web site for additional clarification on the differences among PMI’s
credentials.

Q. What is the cost to earn the credential?
A. The cost for PMI Members to earn the credential is $520.00(US) /
€430.00. The cost to non-members is $670.00 (US) / €555.00.

Q. When will the credential be available?
A. The PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP) will be released in the
second quarter of 2008. However, PMI is currently looking for
candidates for the pilot. The first 100 people to apply and sit for
the exam will receive 50% off the price of the exam. This will be
conducted as a refund. Candidates will also be entered into a
regional drawing (NA, EMEA, LA and AP) for a chance to win
$1,000.00(US). PMI will give away $1,000.00 (US) in each region.
